Frozen Pipe Burst in Boise? What to Do Right Now

Do These 3 Things First
- Shut off the main water valve
In most Boise homes, it’s in the basement, crawl space, garage, or near the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops. - Turn off power to wet areas
If water is near outlets, cords, or your electrical panel, don’t touch anything electrical while standing in or near water. If you can reach the panel on dry ground, switch off the breaker for that area. If not, call an electrician or your utility. - Move belongings and start drying
Lift furniture, rugs, and boxes off wet floors. Soak up standing water with towels, and take photos for your insurance claim.
Mistakes That Make the Damage Worse
- Using a torch or open flame to thaw a pipe
- Turning the water back on before the pipe is repaired
- Waiting days to dry wet drywall, flooring, or insulation, which gives mold time to grow
Common Questions
Will homeowners insurance cover a burst pipe?
Sudden pipe bursts are often covered, but every policy is different. Check your policy or call your insurer.
Who fixes the pipe and who dries the house?
A plumber repairs the pipe. A water damage restoration company removes water and dries the structure. Some companies do both.
