Do These 3 Things First
- Stop the water if you can
If the leak is from plumbing, shut off the main water valve. If it’s from an upstairs fixture, turn off the water to that toilet, tub, or sink. - Stay safe around the ceiling
Keep people out from under a sagging or bulging ceiling. Don’t use ceiling lights or fans if water is near them. If you can reach the panel safely, switch off the breaker for that room. - Protect the room
Put a bucket under the drip and move furniture and electronics away. Take photos before you clean up.
Mistakes That Make the Damage Worse
- Standing under a ceiling that is sagging or bulging with water
- Turning on a light fixture that has water in it
- Painting over a water stain without drying the area first
Common Questions
Why is my ceiling bulging?
Water can collect above the drywall and make it sag. Keep the area clear and call a professional.
Is a ceiling leak an emergency?
If water is actively dripping, the ceiling is sagging, or water is near electrical fixtures, treat it as urgent.
